Choosing the right JPG resolution for your PDF

Resolution controls the number of pixels in each exported image, and that determines both clarity and file size. At 96 dots per inch, a US Letter page becomes about 816 by 1,056 pixels. That is enough for a quick screen view or a thumbnail and keeps the download small. At 150 DPI the same page has more than twice the pixel area, which is the sweet spot for sharing, embedding in slides, or reviewing on a standard monitor. At 300 DPI it has nearly ten times the pixel area of the 96 DPI version, so small type stays crisp and you can zoom in to read fine print, but the files are several times larger.

JPG is a lossy format that suits scans, photographs and pages with continuous colour gradients. It compresses well, so a 300 DPI JPG is often smaller than you might expect. Hard text edges can pick up faint halos at high compression, which is the trade-off for the smaller size. For pages made mostly of text, charts, diagrams or flat colour, consider PDF to PNG or the combined PDF to images tool, which lets you choose PNG for lossless edges. In either format, the output is a picture and no longer contains selectable text.
