Preparing previewDetails
Somewhere there is a form that refuses anything over 200 KB - and this page exists for exactly that form. It is the compress tool with 200 KB already dialled in: drop the file, press one button, and take home a result that fits - or the smallest verified file with the exact distance left to go. Your document never leaves this browser tab.
From upload to 200 KB in four steps
-
Bring the file
Choose a PDF or drag it onto the page. It opens locally, in this tab - your file is never uploaded, no queue, no account standing between you and the result.
-
Nothing to type - 200 KB is set
This preset opens with the ceiling filled in. Leave the level alone: those buttons recompute the target from the file size instead of squeezing harder at the same 200 KB ceiling. Type a different number only if the form asks for one.
-
Let it squeeze
One press runs structural cleanup, image downsampling and font subsetting on your own CPU. The raster redraw waits in reserve for files the first three could not bring down.
-
Judge the verdict
The page reports the final size, the distance to 200 KB and the winning method, beside a preview. Download when the numbers work for you.
How the four methods differ is on how it works; why the ceiling behaves the way it does is on the main compress page.
Why 195 KB beats 200 KB on picky forms
A file that reads exactly 200 KB here can still bounce there, because some servers count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024. Their cap is 200,000 bytes; this page aims under 204,800. Typing 195 KB dodges the whole dispute for a cut nobody can see on the page.
The general rule - the ceiling, the two ways of counting, the 2.3% trap - lives under Your target is a ceiling in bytes.
Which files reach 200 KB and which do not
Scans usually get there: a page image answers to a quality dial with a long travel. Font-heavy text exports often stop above the line instead - smaller, verified, but above it. That split is not a guess: our pilot of 19 runs landed exact targets on plain text and settled scans far lower, and it names the engine floor that decides every miss.
Where the 200 KB ceiling waits for you
Scholarship uploads that take one PDF per applicant. Tender bids with a per-attachment cap. Immigration packets where every file has the same number printed beside it. HR portals that cap resumes at 200 KB a piece. In each case the ritual is the same: squeeze, check the verdict, send.
When the number beside the field differs, the siblings are 150 KB below and 250 KB above. When the file carries pages nobody will read, Delete PDF pages removes them before you squeeze.
Over 200 KB after the run - three exits
First read the verdict: final size, distance to target, winning method. When the winner is images, Size breakdown names the exact pages to attack. Then pick an exit. Split the document with Split PDF so each part fits. Accept 250 KB if the cap is a guideline rather than a wall. Or drop the dead pages and run again. The reasoning behind all three is under If the result lands above your target.
200 KB: five answers
- My 200 KB file gets rejected - is the compressor lying?
- No. The verdict line proves the exact byte count, so a rejection means the other side counts differently: flat thousands instead of 1,024s, or its own safety margin on top. Shave to 195 KB and the dispute disappears.
- Highest or Low - does the level matter at 200 KB?
- No. The level buttons replace the 200 KB target with a share of the uploaded file, so they cannot squeeze harder at the same ceiling. Stay on the 200 KB number, and if quality is sacred, read Compress PDF without losing quality first.
- Do fonts and layout survive at 200 KB?
- Largely, but without a pixel-level promise. Font subsetting keeps the glyphs your pages draw, and the check confirms page count and text before download. It does not prove that fonts, links, metadata or layout survived unchanged, so compare the preview before sending.
- Stays the text selectable?
- Yes. Each candidate is opened again and counted against the source; anything missing over 2% of its characters is not offered for download.
- Can I do this on my phone?
- Yes. This page is one form that runs wherever a modern browser runs - open it on the phone, pick the file, same 200 KB ceiling, same verification.
